[solved]Using Datacard’s Sim with BlackBerry’s IP Modem

Last week my Airtel Data Card 3G device stopped working and replacement is due this week. Because of this I wasn’t able to get connected to internet. Like most of the datacard Airtel’s Data card had Sim inside it which can also be used any mobile like any other Sim.
Saturday when I was updating my Blackberry Device I suddenly saw the option of IP modem in the Desktop Manager and idea clicked in my mind that may be just may be, I can insert this Data Card’s Sim into Blackberry and surf right from there and also can connect to my laptop to surf internet. And Yes I was able to do this except that I couldn’t surf from the Blackberry Phone. I guess it has to do something with the settings which I am still working on.
Follow the steps below which you can use to connect your mobile phone with laptop and use it to surf the internet.
  • Connect your Blackberry phone with your laptop. You will need to connect with USB cable not with WiFi or Bluetooth, it wont work.
  • Launch the Blackberry Desktop manager and click on IP Modem.

Here you will have to configure the IP modem which you can do by clicking the Configure button which is on the left of IP modem screen under connection settings. The best part of the using data card’s sim is that you need no authentication at least with Airtel’s Data card I did not. In case you do there is a screen where you can add details.
The IP Modem configuration screen has lots of pre configured options including for Airtel India and Vodefone Essar. In the configuration you might need to add your Username, password, URL and Access Point.

  • Like you can see the access point is pre-configured when I choose Bharti Airtel India. Once done this you can click on Connect Button on right and it will automatically connect.

Using your phone as IP modem is possible with any phone of the application of that phone and software both supports it. Though In my opinion it should be even possible to use the data reader’s sim into your mobile phone but definitely it needs a configuration.
